Cross-stitch rediscovered

I got bored with the 365 question meme after the end of February and have no plans to restart it. I can, however, thank it for one thing: reigniting my interest in cross-stitch. I was taught to cross-stitch by an eccentric great-aunt when I was around eight years old, on the plastic frames with thick yarn. As I grew older, I graduated to the Aida cloth patterns, and eventually to linen before I lost interest in my teens.

The offhand answer to one of the meme questions prompted an Etsy search and I purchased a couple of beginner-level kits from KnitKnotKrafts (UK). Behold, my first cross-stitch in over twenty years:

The back is a hot mess because I had forgotten that you don't tie knots in the thread, you just leave a tail and stitch over it:

I just completed a second, which is a gift for my Cthulhu-loving sister-out-law.

Much tidier back:

I feel this is an excellent step to be taking toward my bonkers blue-rinse little-old-lady aspirations.

I'm spending my Easter break on a more difficult pattern with flowers and hummingbirds. Once I've finished that, I'll get some more from Fandom Cross Stitchery. No prizes for guessing which is my favourite.

2021 questions (52 and 53/365)

February 21

How does the weather affect your mood?

It affects me a bit, but not so severely that it rules my ability to do stuff. It’s not so much the weather that can bring me down - although prolonged grey/rainy periods do make me feel sluggish - it’s the darkness. I use my full spectrum light a lot on winter afternoons.

February 22

What would you change if you knew you could not fail?

Woo, magical thinking! If we’re talking about big-picture global-scale decision-making, I would make worldwide energy production carbon-neutral. I’d also end the massive disparity in wealth distribution.

If we’re talking about me, I would make it so that I stayed fit without ever having to exercise again. I don't object to doing so occasionally for fun, but being obliged to several times a week is a constant source of irritation.

One day it might be feasible for me to take up nightclubbing again and then I can use dancing as my exercise. Old goth lady at the club, yep. Anyone want to come with?

2021 questions (51/365) + It's A Sin

February 20

What is sure to make you cry?

I shed bucketloads of tears over fiction. “It’s A Sin” (the mini-series on HIV/AIDS in the 1980s in the UK) opened the floodgates with every episode. It’s really good though gearing up to watch it did require summing up a fair bit of emotional resilience.

Real life doesn’t make me cry much.

More stuff about It's A Sin

I have so many incoherent feels about this Channel 4 miniseries and they are all full of spoilers so they go behind a cut. It's beautiful and devastating and if you have the emotional stamina, I urge you to watch it.

So many spoilers )

2021 questions (49 and 50/365) + Fun with Panopto

February 18

What are you most fascinated by at the moment?

Finding ways to prove that we should make STEMM subjects more accessible by actually talking about endemic issues with discriminatory language and culture in higher education and industry while teaching technical topics, not as an afterthought or an optional add-on.

Space debris and space traffic management.

February 19

What are the three most dominant emotions in your life right now?

Determination, ambition, and mild panic.

Finally, here are the two most recent wonderful misinterpretations that the auto-captioning software on Panopto offered up on my pre-recorded lecture material.

My name: Anthony Anketell [no.]

2021 questions (45 and 46/365) + Pony

February 14

How has getting older helped you deal with challenges in life?

I’ve become calmer. I get a lot less riled up by things that would have sent me into a rage spiral twenty years ago.

February 15
When I have a look around my home, it’s very obvious that I…

...need to hoover, again, even if I just did it twelve hours ago.

In other exciting news, someone has washed and brushed the Shaggy Pony, and its coat is once again white(ish)!

2021 questions (43 and 44/365)

February 12
How would a stranger that met you at a dinner party describe you?

What’s a party? It sounds dangerous.

Seriously though, I’ve no idea what strangers make of me, and one of the nice things about getting older is that I no longer care.

February 13
How old do you feel?

Most days I feel exactly the same as I have since I reached adulthood. I wake up early and full of energy, I do a load of stuff, I conk out again. I’ve been fortunate with my physical health and have never suffered unduly from periods, joint pain, or acute or chronic illness. My average weight is higher than it was when I was twenty, and I notice it takes me a little longer than it used to for me to recover from a cold or a hangover, but otherwise, going from 18 to my forties has not caused a noticeable difference in my physical being.

2021 questions (42/365)

February 11
Who would you like to trade lives with for a day and why?

I don’t much fancy living as another human person. I would, however, quite like to spend a day as my cat, sleep for 22 hours, be fussed over when I meowed, and brought my meals on demand.

2021 questions (39 to 41/365)

February 8

What does it mean to you to be spiritual?

On a personal level, not much. I’m not spiritual.

February 9
Do you believe things happen for a reason?

Is this meant to be an oblique way to ask about belief in god(s)? I have none, so no, I don’t think there is a single all-encompassing reason for things to happen.

February 10
What is your take on making mistakes?

It’s inevitable. I believe the wisest and most difficult course is to learn to deal with it with as much grace, dignity, and forgiveness of yourself and others as you can muster.

RANDOM THOUGHT: Today I was reminded that it takes Neptune 165 years to orbit the Sun. Therefore, there is no chance I will live long enough to witness a full Neptune orbit. Uranus, at 84 years, is an achievable target, but who wants to aim for Uranus?

2021 questions (38/365)

February 7

What places are you really grateful exist?

Everywhere on the planet. We have one planet to live on. One. We do not know enough about space travel, about space survival, about terraforming, about sharing and conserving resources, about being decent, kind human beings to one another to survive anywhere else. Anyone who is not extremely bloody grateful for every scrap of land and water on this good Earth is not paying attention.

2021 questions (37/365)

February 6

What do you think about hunting?

The answer to this question is going to be highly dependent on geographical location, culture, and socioeconomic positioning. As an affluent person who dwells about a mile from the nearest well-stocked supermarket, I don’t need to do it. I don't have livestock to protect and I wasn't raised in a culture that prized hunting skill or ascribed any religious, spiritual, or symbolic meaning to it. If you’re perfectly capable of surviving and obtaining food without hunting, I can’t see the point of setting out on a walk with the sole purpose of killing an animal simply because you can. I definitely don’t understand trophy-hunting. It’s cruel and wasteful.

Shaggy Pony + 2021 questions (36/365)

Someone asked in the comments if the Shaggy Ponies are still in the field opposite us. The answer is yes, but sadly the black one who featured in this journal a couple of years ago, especially after she had her baby, has moved homes. A charming white vanner has replaced her, as seen below, and is currently almost as much mud as pony given the soggy conditions.

February 5

What is your take on organ donation?
It saves lives. If my organs are still in a functional state after I die and they might be useful to someone who’s still alive, take as many of them as you can and give them to those people. I won’t be needing them. As for other people, I’d like to think that those healthy folk who don’t have religious beliefs forbidding it would do the same, but it’s their choice.

2021 questions (35/365)

February 4

What responsibilities do you think the media have, if any?

Wow, this is a big question, given the events of the past few years. What happened to all that fluffy cuddly what's-your-favourite-X stuff, meme?!

I think both traditional and social media have a huge responsibility to carefully vett and caveat their reporting. Especially when people in power are consistently and blatantly lying. Don’t just play that clip with the lie in it and then move on to the next topic. Call it out, verbally and visually. Lying to the public should have consequences for the people telling the lies, rather than allowing the public to bear the brunt of them, as we are with the global public health crisis we’re experiencing right now.

2021 questions (32 to 34/365)

After a pretty successful run through January, I fell behind. Coincidentally, term has just started.

February 1

What are your favourite indoor activities?

In a pandemic lockdown, all we can do are indoor activities, apart from the daily walk. I have trouble identifying favourites under these circumstances. I work too much. It isn’t very healthy.

February 2

What are your favourite outdoor activities?

Walking, hiking, snorkeling, looking for shells on the beach, picnicking with friends, running around with the kids. Also, sitting in the grass and looking at the sky, or waiting with my camera in my hand to notice something interesting to photograph. I don’t know why we have to be doing stuff so frantically all the time. It shouldn’t be necessary.

February 3

How do you feel about plastic surgery?

It's not for me, but I happen to be fortunate enough to have been born in, and inhabit for most of my adult life so far, a body that doesn't cause me distress, discomfort, or chronic illness. Everyone else is welcome to do what they must to make themselves happy in their bodies.

2021 questions (30/365 and 31/365)

January 30

What websites did you visit most frequently this week?

Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, the BBC, the virtual learning environment of My University, the search engine at My University which allows me to find peer-reviewed research publications, and the data archives of a scientific space mission.

January 31

What are your favourite things in general?

Mochi, whisky (single-malt Scotch, Japanese whisky and bourbon are my top three), Lego, computers, the internet, space, cats, space cats (thank you, the internet).

I'm not sure these question were particularly illuminating. Somehow we've gotten to the end of January. It hasn't been the most thrilling month in the history of ever, but we're still here, marching along in the same routine of the past ten months, hoping there's a future ahead of us with more diverse activities and companionship in it. Also, Humuhumu spent two hours yesterday crafting a cat toy for Telstar. Observe the immensity of his gratitude below.

2021 questions (25/365)

January 25

What’s the best method of transportation where you live?

Unfortunately, it's a car, my least favourite form of transportation. On foot or bicycle on the roads is downright dangerous on these winding country lanes with blind corners and insane drivers. And public transport is non existent. So it's best to be in control, or at least in the protective shell, of your own personal plastic deathbucket.

2021 questions (24/365)

January 24
How do you feel about getting old?

[Warning: sweary] I think one is supposed to write about one’s fears of loss of youth here, but as susandennis is my role model, I have trouble imagining that being old is going to be anything other than awesome. Each decade of my life has gotten better as I've progressively stopped giving fucks about shit that doesn't matter.  I can only hope the upward trajectory continues. By the time I'm officially old as opposed to just getting there, I will have completed my transformation into blue-rinsed BatGran from hell. Honestly, I can't wait.
